Course summary

What is this course about? Why study the course? Studying History at HHCS will develop your ability to critically evaluate evidence to form sustained arguments, and confidently express your own informed judgements. It will develop your ability to question structures, opinions, and how the past is used and misused. It will develop your curiosity about the world and ability to connect the modern world to its historical development. History is not only one of the facilitating subjects, considered to be amongst the most valuable by top Russell Group universities, but also provides students with an awareness and knowledge of the world around them that means that they become confident and successful citizens. African Kingdoms as well as a depth study in British history of the 20th century specially 1930-1979. Where can this course take you? There are a range of degrees a History A-Level can be of benefit. You might progress to a career in law, politics or education. History students go on to become lawyers, actors, authors, prime ministers, journalists and more. Complementary subjects: • As an academic discipline, History develops skills of analysis, critical thinking, essay-writing and debate which complements many subjects. • As History is an essay-based subject it complements English Literature and Sociology. • As History requires critical evaluation of sources it links well with Psychology. How we elevate beyond the specification: We routinely go on school trips to expand our students' knowledge and understanding of the subject material. Outings include trips to museums such the Churchill War Rooms and the Imperial War Museum.

How is this subject examined? 3 exams: • Paper 1: Written exam: 2 hours 30 mins - 80 Marks. 40% of A-Level • Paper 2: Written exam: 2hours 30 mins - 80 Marks. 40% of A-Level • Coursework: A personal study based on a topic of the student’s choice - 40 Marks - 20% of A-Level
