Course summary

What is this course about? Why study the course? Physics is a challenging and stimulating subject. Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us and the world beyond us. Physics challenges our imaginations with concepts like relativity and string theory and it leads to great discoveries, like computers and lasers, that lead to technologies which change our lives—from healing joints, to curing cancer, to developing sustainable energy solutions. Physics covers the very small: atoms and electrons, to the very large: stars and galaxies. In Physics we attempt to answer the fundamental questions– how did it all begin and how will it all end? Physics is a very desirable A-level to have (and sometimes compulsory) when applying different engineering disciplines. It provides great practice for your creative problem solving ability, a key skill that will help you in all other subjects and employers in all sectors are looking for. Where can this course take you? This course will prepare students to progress into higher education, follow any courses in the world of Engineering/other sciences or enter employment where a knowledge of Physics would be useful. Physics is one of the most sought-after A-Levels by universities and employers. It opens many doors and closes none. Scientists and engineers are at the forefront of fighting the climate and biodiversity crisis, whether that be using research to advise the wisest policy decisions or developing the technologies that can assist in transitioning humanity to a sustainable future. Complementary subjects: You must study Mathematics A-Level if studying Physics. Further Mathematics is helpful but not required. Many universities want to see a breadth in your education and something like a humanities subject can not only keep more of your brain stimulated, but set you apart when applying for a science/engineering degree. How we elevate beyond the specification: We attend lectures at the Institute of Physics on the most cutting edge of topics in science research, and take visits to key places such as the royal Greenwich observatory. There is also the opportunity to take part in competitions run by the British Physics Olympiad.
