Course summary

Media Studies develops creative and critical knowledge, understanding and skills. The course aims to cover a wide range of Media texts including print based and audio-visual Media in a range of formats and genres comprising of, advertising and merchandise, magazines, music videos, video games and television. You will be studying these texts in depth and will be expected to discuss their conventions and issues they present for society and audiences. Component 1: Meanings and Representations in the Media Written examination: 2 hours and 15 minutes, 35% of qualification. This component covers all of the following media forms: music videos, video games, advertising, film marketing, newspapers and radio news/ current affairs programmes. The exam will be analysing a range of studied examples and consists of two sections, firstly analysing Media Language and Representation and secondly analysing Industry and Audience. Component 2: Media Forms and Products in Depth Written examination: 2 hours and 30 minutes, 35% of qualification. This component assesses knowledge and understanding of media language, representation, industry and audiences focusing on specific case studies from television, print based and multi-modal media. The exam will be analysing a range of studied examples and consists of three sections, analysis of texts using all areas of the Media framework tested in Component 1. Component 3: Cross-Media Production Non-exam assessment: 30% of qualification. An individual cross-media production based on two forms in response to a choice of briefs set by Eduqas, applying practical knowledge and understanding of the theory and digital convergence in creating a cross-platform Media artefact and written justification.
