Course summary

From crime and courtroom drama, to consumer and human rights, law touches every part of our lives. Studying law can lead to work in a legal firm or business, victim support, law enforcement, or rehabilitation of offenders, along with other paths. Fascinated by the criminal mind? This A Level Law, A Level Psychology and Applied Certificate in Criminology pathway lets you combine A Levels with a VTQ (vocational technical qualification) and helps you progress on to university. It is a unique programme that provides the practical skills of a vocational course alongside the benefits of an A Level programme. The course provides a sound grounding in the principles of law, the ability to access the language of law and an understanding of the rights and responsibilities as citizens. There is an underlying theme within the curriculum, which is a reinforcement of the principles of participating in a democratic society. Those undertaking the course need be willing to work in a thorough and careful manner in order to enhance their analytical and evaluation skills in order to access future education or employment opportunities. Crucially, students need to be able to apply the law to scenarios to build a sound foundation as to how the law is used in practice. As well as sector knowledge of the legal environment and digital skills, the study programme allows students to develop transferable employability skills such as planning, time management – meeting deadlines, verbal and written communication, numeracy, research, presentation, effective team working, handwriting, completing application particulars, preparing for interview, interview technique, enterprising in preparing for their next career steps, prioritising, and higher order thinking skills such as analysis, evaluation, reflection as well as problem solving. They will also develop personal qualities in producing the course work, attending the industrial placement and preparing for examinations i.e. punctuality to group meetings, meticulous in paying attending to detail, reliability in meeting deadlines for the tutor, group tasks or examinations, confidence, resilience/endurance, demonstrating being able to work confidentiality, professionalism through advice and tutor feedback throughout the life of the course, self-discipline in preparing for examinations. A Level Psychology will include introductory topics in psychology, psychology in context and issues and options in psychology.

Entry requirements

4 x GCSEs at Grade 4 including English Language at Grade 5 (preferably a Grade 6) and Maths at Grade 5. You will also be asked to sit a short written assessment to determine your appropriate level of study when you enrol.

How you'll be assessed

For A Level Psychology, there are externally set examinations at the end of year 2.
