Course summary

The Applied Law course content focuses on the English legal system and areas of both private and public law within the law of England and Wales. Learners will be required to show knowledge and understanding of the English legal system and will look into specific areas of law. This will provide learners with the foundation for the study of both private and public law. This specification will develop learners’ understanding of legal methods and reasoning through the study of statutory interpretation and judicial precedent. Learners will be introduced to the concept of legal liability through the study of criminal law and some aspects of the law of tort. This course will enable them to develop and apply the techniques of legal methods and reasoning to analyze and offer answers to legal problems, based on legal rules and principles, and develop the ability to construct and communicate legal arguments by reference to appropriate legal authorities. The A Level in Law will develop learners’ knowledge of law through advanced study of additional legal subjects. The law is a very important part of our society, it controls our behaviors toward each other and feeds into our understanding of rights and wrongs. In Year 1 you will study 2 units: ● Unit 1: Dispute Solving in Civil Law ● Unit 2: Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System In year 2 you will study 2 units: ● Unit 3: Applying the Law ● An optional unit chosen from: Unit 4: Aspects of Family Law Unit 5: Consumer Law Unit 6: Contract Law Unit 7: Aspects of Tort You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, case studies, assessments, group work, practical work, projects, extended writing, and interactive activities. Applied Law enables us to take a more in-depth look at the law and engages students in realistic work-related scenarios that encourage them to apply what they have learned. For a student with an aspiring future in the legal profession, this course will give them an insight into the legal career and help them develop the skills to thrive. As part of the course, we cover aspects of civil and criminal law, understanding not only how to apply the law but also how to draft legal and professional documents. We also have the opportunity to cover a range of other topics such as Contract Law and Family Law, which gives students an insight into studying Law at University. Learning Aims and Objectives ● Develop your knowledge and understanding of the English legal system and areas of both private and public law within the law of England and Wales ● Develop an understanding of legal methods and reasoning as used by lawyers and the judiciary. ● Develop and apply the techniques of legal methods and reasoning to analyze and offer answers to problems, based on legal principles, legislation, and case law. ● Develop the ability to construct conclusions and communicate legal arguments by reference to appropriate legal authorities. ● Develop the ability to communicate persuasive legal arguments by reference to appropriate legal authorities. ● Be able to demonstrate critical awareness of the influence and operation of the law in society.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 4 including maths and/or English or a vocational qualification Level 2 in the chosen subject.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through an external assessment (Unit 1 and Unit 3) in January, and then through coursework (Unit 2 and optional Unit) in the spring/summer term. Progression onto the second year of the course is dependent on learners achieving a pass in the first year content. At the end of your 2-year course, your performance in all 4 units will be calculated into an overall grade by the exam board.
