Course summary

This course is designed for students who would like a career in sport including those students who are still unsure as to what area of sport this could be. The course specialises in coaching, sports development, fitness, nutrition, teaching, sports rehabilitation and business. It is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports-related degree including Sports Rehabilitation; those looking to gain access to Higher Training Apprenticeships; those looking to get into PE teaching, to gain employment within the Leisure and Recreation Industry including Leisure Centre Management, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructor. Physical Education, Sport and Dance have always played an important role here at Wyke Sixth Form College, and although we are not a sports college we have twice been crowned “National Sports College of the Year”. Students acquire so many experiences from competing in National championships to competing against fellow students in an intra-tutor league, whatever the level and capability, there is something for everyone. The Sports Department has seen exceptional success both academically and competitively. Not only does the department offer both Level and CTEC courses to accommodate several students across all assessment methods it is also ranked in the top one per cent nationally. Subjects are taught by A Level and CTEC Level 3 specialist teachers and the coaching staff are of the highest calibre. Each member of staff is trained and dedicated to not only reach academic success but also reaching the highest accolade possible when it comes to competing. In 2019 the department won a Pearson National Teaching Award and was announced as the best FE teaching team in the country. Students could progress straight into employment in the leisure and recreation field. Many students progress onto degrees or Higher apprenticeships in Sports Therapy, Personal Training, Sports Studies, Coaching, Human Movement Studies, Leisure and Recreation courses or train to be Physical Education teachers. This course is also a suitable basis for anyone wishing to continue to Physiotherapy, Sports Science and Sports Retail; or those looking to enter the Uniformed Services.

Entry requirements

• Minimum 5 GCSEs • All grade 4 or above • Must include an English • Can include 2 Merits (or above) at BTEC/CTEC CTEC Extended Certificate in Sport requires students to achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for their chosen pathway plus a grade 5 or higher in GCSE PE/ Merit in Level 2 BTEC Sport. If not studied at Level 2, students must achieve a grade of 5 or higher in GCSE Science. The minimum entry requirements will be discussed at open events and your college interview.

How you'll be assessed

CTEC EXTENDED CERTIFICATE (1 A LEVEL EQUIVALENT) UNIT 1: BODY SYSTEMS In this unit, you will explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems. UNIT 2: SPORTS COACHING & ACTIVITY LEADERSHIP Students explore the theory behind what it takes to make a good coach. Learners will also explore the roles and responsibilities of coaches and leaders. Learners will develop the techniques, personal knowledge and ability to deliver coaching sessions. UNIT 3: SPORTS ORGANISATION AND DEVELOPMENT Students will gain an understanding of the organisations involved in sport in the UK, their roles and responsibilities and how they work together. UNIT 8: ORGANISATION OF SPORTS EVENTS Students will learn how to plan, prepare for and deliver a sporting event including looking at topics such as logistics, budgeting, marketing and contingency planning. UNIT 20: SPORT & EXERCISE SOCIOLOGY Students will learn how different sociological theories apply to sports before looking at the influences and impacts that sports and society can have on each other and the role the media has to play in it all.
