Course summary

This course is designed for those looking to pursue a career in the fascinating and intriguing world of law, business and management as well as preparing you for further studies in any subject at university. Today’s budding lawyers are quick thinkers, who are able to put forward a well-balanced argument vital for any path you wish to take in life. You will need to have strong literacy skills as there is so much more to law than merely solving crimes. Students should have an interest in our legal system and current affairs. A Level Law will help you to develop many transferrable skills that will be useful no matter what you want to do long-term. You should be motivated and have the will to succeed, be dedicated, able to cope when the going gets tough, and have excellent, creative communication skills. Law is an increasingly dynamic and expanding topic, which covers nearly every aspect of our day to day lives. The course begins by looking at how our laws are made, who can make them and how we enforce them. You will then go on to learn about the basic elements of criminal law, as well as focusing on the specific requirements for a variety of offences against the person. You will then study the law of tort, also known as civil wrongs, and the different reasons you can sue someone for compensation. You will critically evaluate the laws as you learn about them. In the second year, you will go on to explore the law of contract, as well as furthering your knowledge of criminal law and tort. You will also look at different concepts of law and analyse whether our legal system is not only moral but whether it can really achieve justice.
