This two-year course is for you if you are creative and enthusiastic about art and design and want to gain the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to build your future as an artist or designer. This stimulating and demanding course will allow you to explore different areas of art and design in the first year and then enhance your skills and knowledge within a chosen specialist practice in the second year. It will support you to progress to higher education, training or apprenticeships in the creative sector. On this course, you will study for the UAL Level 3 Diploma in your first year. On successful completion of the Diploma, you can then progress to UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in your second year. This is a focused and practical course that enables you to access vibrant hands-on teaching sessions and to work on a range of experimental and industry-related project briefs. You will develop and test your creativity by developing a wide range of skills and techniques such as drawing, painting, 3D, mixed-media, printmaking, photography and digital skills on our Apple Macs. You will gain an understanding of visual language, research, contextual approaches and the creative process, therefore enabling you to develop creative ideas and produce creative outcomes for a portfolio of work. This course will also enable you to develop and utilise transferable skills that will benefit you in other areas of your personal and professional life, such as initiative, problem-solving, reflective learning, environmental awareness, time management and communication. In year 2, you will enter the Royal Opera House Design Challenge competition. The college is a flagship centre for the Design Challenge and previous winners have had their work exhibited at the V&A and gained work experience at the Royal Opera House. As our courses are awarded by the University of Arts London, you will have the opportunity to apply for their Insight Programme in London over the holiday periods. This course consists of one unit which is assessed externally by UAL Awarding Body at the end of year 1 and unit 2 which is assessed and graded internally and externally moderated at the end of year 2. Students must complete Unit 1 in the first year to progress to Year 2.
Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and English or a level 2 qualification in a relevant subject area passed with merit or distinction with maths and English at grade 9-4 (or Functional Skills level 2 or above).
