Course summary

Have you always wanted to know how to make clothing or decorative products? Do you enjoy art, learning new techniques and being hands-on? Then this course is for you. No prior making or designing experience is required, as all of the skills and techniques you will need to use will be introduced on the course, however the ability to draw is expected. You will work with a wide range of materials and processes and have the opportunity to explore both wearable design and decorative surfaces. You will ultimately learn how to work through a process of research, design and making, which will result in original pieces of work. Year 12 The Introductory Project: You will learn all you need to know to successfully work through fashion and textile making and design processes. You will be guided through how to create your own sample pieces by demonstration of a wide range of techniques, influenced by designer work and existing products. You will be led into gaining research skills (including photography and drawing) to collate a body of visual work based on a theme you will choose, that will allow you to create your own fashion or textile designs. Following this, you will then go on to make your own final product. Externally Set Task You will use all the knowledge you have gained from the Introductory Project to choose one starting point theme set by the exam board. You will then work through the design process to produce preparatory work by researching, planning and developing your ideas. Following this, you will go on to work through the 10 hours of supervised time to produce a practical piece, which can be fashion or textile based. Year 2 Personal Investigation You will use all of the knowledge you have gained from Year 1 and put this together by selecting your own theme to develop your work through research, design and making processes to produce your own portfolio of work. You will also produce a written component, a related study, which will compliment your portfolio of work. Externally Set Task You will choose one starting point from a number set by the exam board. You will then work through the design process to produce preparatory work by researching, planning and developing your ideas. Following this, you will go on to work through the 15 hours of supervised time to produce a practical piece which can be fashion or textile based.
