- learn about the Education system as well as Families and Households. - examine the role and functions of the education system, including its relationship to the economy and to class structure. - learn how to apply sociological research methods to the study of education as well as how sociologists plan, conduct and analyse all of their research. - engage in debates over whether or not the traditional nuclear family even still exists. - examine the role and impact of the 'Media' in today's society. - analyse how the media represents age, social class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and disabilities. - gain a critical awareness of crime, deviance, social order and social control. They will examine the social distribution of crime and deviance by ethnicity, gender and social class and explore recent patterns and trends in crime. - learn how to apply sociological research methods to the study of crime and deviance. By doing this, student will gain a solid understanding of key theorist and debates which underpin the study of sociology.
