Course summary

A Level mathematics builds from GCSE level mathematics and introduces calculus and its applications. It emphasises how mathematical ideas are interconnected and how mathematics can be applied to model situations mathematically using algebra and other representations, to help make sense of data, to understand the physcial world and to solve problems in a variety of contexts, including social sciences and business. It prepares students for further study and employment in a wide range of disciplines involving the use of mathematics. Course Content - Year 12 Students study pure maths topics such as Exponentials, Calculus, Vectors and Algebra. Alongside these students also study topics from both Mechanics and Statistics. Course Content - Year 13 Students extend their knowledge from year 12 at pure maths studying topics such as Further Calculus, Sequences, Trigonometry and Numerical Methods. The students also continue their studies into Mechanics and Statistics.

Entry requirements

• To enter Sixth Form you require 5 GCSE’s Grade 4 and above, including English or Maths. • For students who typically attain 9-5 grades at GCSE. • Grade 6 in Maths on higher tier paper* • For A Level Maths students who achieve a grade 6 will be required to sit an additional paper during the first week of Sixth Form to assess suitability for this course.

How you'll be assessed

All public exams are taken at the end of Year 13. Students will sit 3 two hour papers, each equally weighted and worth 100 marks.
