A-level French is an exciting and thought-provoking course. It not only equips students with the ability to communicate in French but also fosters transferable skills including critical thinking and creativity. In addition, it develops an understanding of French culture and society and the influence of the past on present-day French-speaking countries. Topics that are covered include The Changing Face of the Family, the Digital World, Patrimony, Music and Cinema, Strikes, Immigration, the Diverse Society, and the Political System. Participation in discussions and debates, on a range of topics, is a key element of the course, as well as taking part in a wide range of interactive learning experiences. Students also read and study “No et Moi” and complete a film analysis of the film “Au revoir les enfants!” The speaking exam at the end of the course also offers students the opportunity to complete an independent research project on a topic of their own choice related to French-speaking countries. This is excellent preparation for university-based tasks There is also an opportunity for all students to participate in a work experience placement in St. Étienne to improve confidence and fluency with spoken French. Students completing the A Level in French have gone on to study French or Linguistics at university. Students are also able to study French alongside many other subjects such as Business, Maths, and Engineering. French offers many varied career routes, as being able to speak French is seen as a highly attractive skill by future employers.
All students must achieve at least five grades 5-9 (including Maths and English). Students are expected to have gained a Grade 6 in GCSE French.
