The study of English Literature allows you to deeply understand how people have thought about the world and understood their place within it. Our course encourages you to consider profound questions - such as the meaning of love and the impact of war - questions that are central to what it means to be human, and which are as relevant today as they were 500 years ago. We will analyse texts using a historicist approach: understanding them as rooted within a tradition of literature in a particular time and place. You will think deeply about themes, engage with critical thinkers, and debate theories that have shaped our culture. You will gain and develop skills in analyzing language, applying theories and the ability to evaluate and critique ideas. You will also complete a non-exam assessment where you will have the freedom to choose which texts you analyze. We will teach you how to shape your ideas into a cohesive argument and make your point eloquently- a valuable skill on any university course! Y12 ● Love Poetry Over Time Anthology ● Shakespeare’s Othello (Play) ● The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald (1920s novella) Y13 – WW1 and its Aftermath ● Regeneration by Pat Barker (Modern novel) ● The Wiper’s Times by Ian Hislop and Paul Newman (Modern Play) ● The Oxford Book of War Poetry
