Course summary

On our highly practical Fine Art course you will be encouraged to push the limits of your creativity! You will experiment and try new materials, whilst learning to think critically and reflect on your work and the work of others. You will develop and refine your style of working, based on your chosen themes. You will have the choice of working across a wide range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Many students who opt to take Fine Art often use it as a springboard to pursue an art-based subject at an Art College or University. Above all, it is paramount that you have an interest in and aptitude for Art. Fine Art is a perfect springboard for a huge range of creative careers! Many of these will require further study at an Art college or University. Examples of career paths to name but a few are: advertising, publishing, animation, graphic design, games design, fashion, architecture, film, media, museums and galleries, theatre, and illustration.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English and Maths. Grade 6/B or above in Art.

How you'll be assessed

In Year 12 students undertake a series of experimental workshops and tasks to build skills. Component 1 begins with the Personal Investigation coursework unit on your chosen theme. This continues into Year 13 and provides 60% of the final grade. In Year 13 students complete the Personal Investigation coursework (Component 1) and also work on an Externally Assessed Assignment (Component 2) providing 40% of the final grade. Component 1: Experimental Skills Workshops Build your knowledge and skillset in using a very wide range of media and techniques. Learn to demonstrate the development of your outcomes and how to meet all assessment objectives. The Personal Investigation coursework (on your chosen theme) unit provides 60% of the final grade including an essay element (1000-3000 words). Component 2: Externally Set Assignment involving the selection of a chosen theme and a preparatory period to prepare research and planning. This is followed by an exam during which a Final Outcome is produced. This element provides 40% of the final grade.
