The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Information Technology is a qualification equivalent in size to one A Level. It is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information alongside other fields of study, to progress to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT. Learners will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business, and using IT to communicate and share information. You will learn to master several applications some of which will be new to you, including • MS Office • MS Project Manager • Adobe Photoshop • Adobe Flash • Adobe Dreamweaver When taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications, the qualification allows learners to progress to a degree in an information technology discipline or a degree where information technology-related skills and knowledge may be advantageous. The qualification supports entry to, for example: • BA (Hons) in Computer Arts • BSc (Hons) in Fashion Buying Management • BSc (Hons) in Software Development for Animation • BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance The qualification, when studied with other Level 3 qualifications, is aimed at progression to higher education but also enables learners to develop knowledge and skills needed for entry-level roles related to IT, including vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/entry-level roles such as social media specialist, web/content developer, or business analyst.
Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above. Plus a grade 4 in the relevant subject area. A grade 4/Pass or better in BTEC ICT or equivalent level 2 qualification. A strong interest in ICT and desire to study the subject at A level.
4 units of work: Unit 1 Information Technology Systems-Externally Assessed as written exam paper in Year 13. Unit 2 Creating Systems to Manage information-Externally Assessed as a 5-hour controlled assessment in Year 12. Unit 3 Social Media in Business - Internally assessed as a coursework piece in Year 12. Unit 6 Website DevelopmentInternally assessed as a coursework piece in Year 13.
