On this course, you will develop the necessary performance skills to enable you to study music at a higher education establishment. Not only do we focus on developing your instrumental and performance skills, but we explore the wider music industry, the varied roles within it, and how to be successful in preparing to enter that industry. You will cover units in the following areas: • Solo Performance Skills In this unit, you will explore and practise the specific skills associated with performing as a soloist. These will include: how to engage your audience, stagecraft, rehearsal technique, repertoire selection and creative reflection in order to improve. You will perform in a wide array of settings and have the opportunity to focus on specific developmental strategies that will support you as a performer. • Ensemble Performance Skills Musicians rarely work in isolation and the ability to perform as part of an ensemble is an essential skill for any musician, regardless of style. Whether you are part of a pop group or a large symphony orchestra, the skills of teamwork and communication are vital. You will explore a variety of genres and have the opportunity to perform in a range of performance settings, whilst exploring different techniques, stylistic and musical elements in the musical parts you perform. • Professional Practice in the Music Industry Behind the bright lights, costumes, gigs, sessions and festivals, the music industry is run by a wide variety of people who work hard to make live performance successful for the artist, and enjoyable for the audience. In this unit, we will explore the various array of roles that are available within the music industry, and how these roles are completed successfully. You will understand the professional skills that are important in the industry and learn the importance of financial management, effective interpersonal skills and working with others. • Practical Music Theory and Harmony Music theory and harmony relates to all forms of music. It is about how the music we make and listen to is constructed and how it works. This unit will develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamental musical theory and how it’s applied in practical musical activities. You will develop and apply theoretical knowledge in a relevant, useful and meaningful way.
- Minimum prior attainment which must be achieved to enrol on this course: APS of 4 including grade 6 in Music at GCSE - Best 8 APS of 5.5+, including grade 5 in GCSE English & Maths. If you have studied a subject at GCSE and wish to study it at A Level, a minimum of a grade 5 pass is required.
