The English combined A Level course is a great option for students who enjoy both Literature and Language. The course combines the two elements allowing you to develop both your linguistic and literary analysis. Taking the skills studied at GCSE, the course provides you with the foundation to develop a more thoughtful and developed understanding of how texts are constructed to impact you as a reader. The course consists of four elements: reading as a writer; analyzing poetry, exploring the differences between spoken and written non-fiction texts, and exploration of dramatic devices in a play. This course not only develops your academic skills but allows you to develop an understanding of socio-economic influences on literature that has stood the test of time.
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including a grade 5 at English Language or Literature.
You will be assessed throughout the year through classed based essays and past-papers. You will sit mock examinations in January and June of Year 12 and in January of Year 13. At the end of Year 13 you will sit the examination (three papers). You will also complete an independent study that is worth 20% of your overall mark.
