Religious Studies at A-Level provides an opportunity to address many big questions in a reasoned way whilst being introduced to the writing of many of the great scholars. You will explore a range of fascinating ideas, such as: the view that this world is an illusion; the idea if God’s existence could be proved like a mathematical concept and if moral rules are a matter of opinion rather than a universal standard. You will explore how ethics has an impact on a range of topic areas, such as: business, sex and euthanasia. Within the A-Level you will also explore topics about the nature of soul, mind and body, issues around language and meaning and religious experience, along with unpicking the problem of evil and suffering. As part of our work on Christianity we look at the concept of death and the afterlife (and how to get there), who Jesus was and what He taught and how Dietrich Bonhoeffer influenced a religious community through civil disobedience. To do well in this subject at A Level you will need to enjoy discussion with others and be able to recall information, as well as apply theories and teachings to new situations. A student who is a great philosopher is someone who has the capacity to develop both critical thinking and communication skills. You will also need to appreciate views of others and be able to question and challenge these in a respectful way. Religious Studies is a very challenging A Level that demonstrates to employers and universities that you are a creative thinker and reflective learner. Students will be offered the chance to go to Rome as part of the course and trips to the Candelight Conferences in London are also planned.
- GCSE Religious Studies - Grade 6. If not studied previously then GCSE English Language and Literature and/or a GCSE humanity subject at Grade 6 - At least 5 passes at GCSE grade 4-9 to join the sixth form, however most A Level subjects require students to have grade 5 in Maths and English.
