Biology is a subject of huge scope, from the tiniest parts of a cell visible only with an electron microscope up to whole ecosystems and indeed the planet itself. There is also a significant proportion of Biochemistry involved (A-level Chemistry students certainly gain an advantage in this area). The early part of the course focuses on the Biology foundations: practical skills, the cell, moving substances in and out of the cell, and transport in organisms, including gas exchange, circulation, and plant transport. There is also a section on evolution, biodiversity, and disease. All topics covered are in a contemporary context, examining how the understanding of science impacts us and looking at the application of the knowledge in modern Biology. Biology is obviously of great use in any career involving the subject such as medicine, nursing, or environmental careers. However, the scientific nature of the subject means it will be of use for any scientific course at the university level. Additionally, the academic rigor and transferrable skills developed in Biology will be looked on favorably for many non-scientific careers.
Grade 6/B in RS and grade 6/B or above in English. Biology 6/B at GCSE Combined Science - 66/BB at GCSE.
Students sit three terminal exams plus standard practical tasks (during the school year). Examinations are 2hr 15min duration in two cases and 1hr 30 minutes for the third and account for 37%, 37% and 26% of the course marks respectively. The assessed practical tasks are assessed to determine whether a student either passes or fails a separate practical component certificate.
