Course summary

• You want to specialise in one of the fundamental Sciences and Chemistry is the foundation of many other disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacology, forensic science, materials sciences and nanotechnology. • You have an enquiring mind that can see patterns in evidence and provide explanations for them. • You want to become an expert problem solver and develop a wide variety of practical scientific techniques. • You are fascinated by how things work. You will study three areas of chemistry over the two-year course. These are: • Physical Chemistry- Energy changes, reversible reactions and equilibria, kinetics, pH, quantitative chemistry. • Inorganic Chemistry- Atomic structure, crystal systems and intermolecular forces, redox reactions, groups 2 and 7, transition metals, chemistry of aqueous metal ions. • Organic Chemistry- structure and nomenclature, functional groups, mechanisms, polymers, amino acids, spectroscopic structure determination. In addition you will build a portfolio of practical work to show your competency in selecting apparatus, using it skillfully and acquiring accurate data. This is a key part of your learning in Chemistry.
