Do you want to be a tree surgeon or a forensic scientist, a teacher or work on the human genome project? These are just a few ideas of what you could do with your biology A - level. Biology is one of the most popular A - level subjects in the country, attracting students studying a wide range of other subjects. Students often go on to study biological degrees and go on to careers in law, computing, accounting or teaching. Biology is a rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career such as how to: collect and evaluate data; investigate facts and use deduction; put over your point of view effectively; apply your knowledge and understanding. Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from microorganisms to genetic engineering Topics covered over the two years: • Biological molecules • Cells • Organisms exchange substances with their environment • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms • Energy transfers in and between organisms • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems, • The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

You will need at least a grade 6 in GCSE biology or GCSE combined science. It is also required that you have a level 5 in both GCSE Mathematics and English.

How you'll be assessed

Over the two years, you will study a range of topics which will be examined in three papers at the end of two years of study. A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A - level. This will be assessed by teachers and will be based on direct observation of students’ competency in a range of skills that are not assessable in written exams.
