Course summary

Core Maths is a brand new course for those who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but are not planning on taking AS or A-level mathematics. At the end of the one-year course, you will come out with a level 3 qualification – similar to an AS. The qualification is assessed by final examination. It does carry the same UCAS points as other AS subjects. Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real-life skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life, and will include a financial maths element. It will also help with other A-level subjects – in particular with science, geography, business studies, psychology and economics. You will be taught using a range of methods from textbooks to online materials and self-study to discover the world of mathematics. Internal examinations and the use of past paper materials will also be used. In the BTEC National Units there are opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing employability skills in the following three main categories: • Cognitive and problem-solving skills • Intrapersonal skills • Interpersonal skills
