Course summary
Sociology is the study of society. It seeks to investigate human behaviour by examining the relationship between individuals and society. It asks important questions such as: • Why are some groups of people more powerful than others? • Why do some individuals achieve more than others? • Why do some people commit crime? The course introduces students to key themes such as culture, identity, social inequality, power and social change, with a particular focus on topics including education, families and households, crime and deviance, and the role of the media. The course encourages learners to think critically about social issues, use evidence to support arguments and understand different sociological theories and perspectives, preparing them for further study or careers in areas like social research, education, social work, law and public policy.
