Physics
Course summary
This course will develop analytical and problem solving skills as well as giving you a strong base in theoretical and practical concepts. This course is highly regarded by employers and universities. Year One Unit 1. This unit covers the measurements and their errors that are encountered in physics Unit 2. Students encounter the quantum world of particles and radiation Unit 3. In this unit the students develop further their understanding of waves, looking closer at the electromagnetic spectrum and investigating interference and superposition. Unit 4. Students study how quantities such as velocity, acceleration and force are represented and calculated using vectors and how forces effect materials. Unit 5. In this unit electricity is studied to greater depth and students learn about the role of potential dividers in control circuits. Year Two Unit 6. Further mechanics and thermal physics are studied in this unit with an emphasis on circular and simple harmonic motion. The thermal properties of gases are also covered in this unit. Unit 7. In this unit students study gravitational, electric and magnetic fields and their applications in capacitors, transformers and generators. Unit 8. Students cover the topic of nuclear physics in this unit and study how the nucleus changes during radioactive decay and how the energy released can be harnessed. Unit 9. In the astrophysics topic students delve deep into space to investigate astronomical distances, the nature and evolution of stars and how the universe is observed.
