Course summary

In this course, you will: Read a range of novels, plays, and poetry from a variety of genres and literary movements. Gain an understanding of the historical contexts of the texts studied as well as an overview of different literary movements throughout history. Develop your skills of analysis and understanding of the technical terminology used in the study of literature. Love Through The Ages You will study: One Shakespeare play (Othello). An anthology of pre1900 poetry. And one novel (The Great Gatsby). Texts in Shared Contexts This will include: R.C. Sherriff’s Journey’s End. An anthology of WW1 poems. Pat Barker’s Life Class.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including GCSE maths. At least a 6 in GCSE English language is also required.

How you'll be assessed

A Level: 80% by examination at the end of the two years. 20% coursework – an independent piece of work on a comparative critical study of two texts, at least one of which must have been written pre-1900.
