For the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport students must study 14 units and for the Diploma they must study 10 units: • Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology - Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems. This unit is externally marked. It is set and marked by Pearson. The examination will be one hour and 30 minutes in length. • Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being - Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client's health and well-being. This unit will be assessed under supervised conditions. Learners will be given a case study one week before the supervised assessment period to carry out preparatory work. • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry - Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities. • Unit 4: Sports Leadership - Learners study what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role, and the leadership skills and techniques necessary when leading activities in different roles. Unit 5: Application of Fitness Testing - Learners gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness. • Unit 6: Sports Psychology - This unit covers the psychological dimensions of sport, and introduces psychological techniques that can be used to enhance performance. • Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance - Learners study the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports. • Unit 8: Coaching for Performance - Learners will develop the techniques, personal knowledge and ability to deliver coaching sessions. • Unit 9: Research Methods in Sport - Learners cover the importance of research, factors affecting the quality of research, an introduction to research and the different methods commonly used in sport-based research. • Unit 10: Sports Event Organisation - Learners will plan, promote and deliver an approved sports event and review the implementation of the event and their own performance. • Unit 17: Sports Injury Management - Learners study the signs and symptoms of sports injuries, application of basic treatment and rehabilitation methods, injury risk factors and injury prevention. • Unit 19: Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity - Learners study the development and provision of sport in the UK and its relationship with global sport, including understanding what is needed to write a proposal for a sports development project. This unit is assessed under supervised conditions. Learners will be given a case study one week before a supervised assessment period in order to carry out research. • Unit 22: Investigating Business in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry - Learners investigate how business operates in the sport and active leisure industry and how it responds to trends and other influences to meet the needs of clients and to benefit the business. This unit is assessed under supervised conditions. Learners will be given information two weeks before a supervised assessment period in order to carry out research. • Unit 23: Skill Acquisition in Sport - Learners study the factors that contribute to a skilled performance in sport and examine how sports performers learn and develop their skills.
Entry requirements for Rugby College: New students - Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above for Extended Diploma including English. Progressing Students - A Level 2 Diploma at Pass or above, plus GCSE English at grade 4 or above. Entry requirements for Moreton Morrell College: New students - Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths OR Science. Progressing students - Level 2 in Sport at Pass or above plus GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above.
You will be assessed through a mixture of internal and external assessment methods. External assessments include: • Examinations - where all learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome • Set Tasks - where learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task. Internal assessments: Learners are assessed using a variety of styles to help them develop a broad range of transferable skills. Learners could be given opportunities to: • write up the findings of their own research • use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations • carry out projects for which they have choice over the direction and outcomes demonstrate practical and technical skills.
