Course summary

A Level French will help you explore a wide range of topics described below, which will add to your understanding of the language and country. Content Year 1 Theme 1: Evolving French society ● Changing family structures ● Education ● World of work Theme 2: Political and artistic culture in French-speaking countries ● Music ● Media ● Festivals and traditions Content Year 2 Theme 3: Immigration and the French multicultural society ● Positive impacts of immigration in French society ● Challenges of immigration and integration in France ● Rise of extreme right Theme 4: Occupation and Resistance in France during WW2 ● Occupied France ● The Vichy regime ● Resistance You will study a book and a film which will link to the topics. They will give you further insight into French culture. We strongly advise you to watch the film and read the book. You will also learn new grammar and vocabulary and you will be able to translate into and out of French. You will develop your critical thinking, creativity and independence and also develop skills to be able to learn other languages. Paper 1- Listening, Reading and Translation into English You will have to: • Understand the main points, gist and detail from spoken and written material; • Infer meaning from complex spoken and written material, including factual and abstract content; • Assimilate and use information from spoken and written sources; • Summarize information from spoken and written sources; • Read and respond to a variety of texts written for different purposes and drawn from a range of authentic sources, including contemporary, historical and literary, fiction and non-fiction texts. Paper 2 – Written Response to Works and Translation into French You will have to: • Study 2 works, either a literary work and a film, or two literary works, in French; • Be able to provide a critically response in French to the works, demonstrating an appreciation of the concepts and issues covered and of the features such as the form and the technique of presentation of the work (e.g. the effect of narrative voice in a prose text or camera work in a film). Career & Further Study. With an A Level you can: • Apply to university to study a language • Combine a language with another subject (e.g. business) at • University • Communicate with people from other countries • Work abroad • Work for a company with international links • Be confident in the language when traveling abroad • Improve your UCAS application for any subject

Entry requirements

7 in the relevant language and an average of 5 in English Language and English Literature. Additional Information: Candidates with a high 6 will also be considered.

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: 9FR0/01 Listening, Reading, Translation into English Translation into French 2:00 hrs. 40% Paper 2: 9FR0/02 Written response to works, literary and film 2:40 hrs. 30% Paper 3: 9FR0/03 Speaking 15-18 minutes (plus 5 minutes preparation time) 30%
