Course summary

The Extended Certificate in Applied Psychology offers a broad basis of study for the applied psychology sector. It is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. There are four units of study across two years. Two of these units will be assessed by external examination and two will be assessed internally through written coursework. You will learn about the core approaches to explaining human behaviour (behaviourism, cognitive, biological and social approaches). Psychological concepts will be applied to explain: Human aggression; Consumer behaviour; Gender. You will learn about psychological theories and studies related to lifestyle choices and unhealthy behaviours including: Stress; Addiction. You will learn about different approaches to psychopathology and different ways of diagnosing and treating mental illness and the role of professionals in supporting mental health. You will apply your learning to: Personality disorders; Schizophrenia; Phobias; Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); Depression; Addiction; Eating disorders. You will also learn about the importance of research in psychology and about the research methods that are used in psychology. You will plan and carry out your own psychological investigation.

Entry requirements

Students must have achieved a minimum of Grade 5 or above in both English Language and Mathematics and Grade 5 (equivalent) in at least 3 other GCSE/Level 2 qualifications. Science GCSE at Grade 5 or above is also required. Other related GCSE/Level 2 subjects may be considered.
