Course summary

The course investigates how we become who we are; focusing on aspects of identity such as gender, class, ethnicity and age; how much they impact upon us as individuals and how this has changed over time and cultures. You will also study the sociology of the Family; how and why family structures and social demographics have changed, before applying core sociological theory to explanations of why the family is an important aspect of society. The second year of study builds on this and studies the impact of emerging digital communications such as the internet and social media on our identities and relationships. The Crime and Deviance module focuses on how aspects of our identity make us more or less likely to be a victim of crime, as well various ways of dealing with offender behaviour from different political viewpoints. This course is suitable for anyone interested in the way our society operates. Sociology requires an inquiring and critical mind; you will need to be able to look at our society objectively and understand the differences between the UK now and in the past and the UK compared to other cultures. You also need to have an interest in current affairs, as being able to apply your knowledge to the real world is a crucial skill.
