Film Studies is a fascinating and enriching a-level which combines both academic and creative study. Students have the opportunity to write analytically and evaluate the ways directors create meaning in films. They also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of filmmaking to their own creative projects. You will study a diverse range of film, including documentary, film from the silent era, experimental film, short films and also British and global cinema. Through these you will analyse the key concepts (including social, cultural, political, historical and technological contexts) and other contexts to explore how films generate meaning, using a variety of filmmaking perspectives. Alongside these you will study the techniques and skills required to be able to produce your own screenplay and short film, combining careful analytical analysis and practical film development. This course allows you to develop two different forms of study – analytical and creative. You will learn about how directors create meaning in films and be able to analyse and evaluate how effectively filmmakers use different methods in films. After you’ve learned about these features, you will apply your knowledge of filmmaking to your own creative coursework.
