In Economics you will look at the fundamental forces which affect our lives, such as employment, prices, international trade and poverty. Economists are often in healthy debate with each other over these issues. It is this controversy which makes Economics lively and interesting and allows you the opportunity to make your own judgements and form your own opinions. Economics concerns the allocation of society’s scarce resources amongst the many alternative uses to which they could be put. This course focuses on both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Microeconomics addresses issues such as: ‘Why is the price of bread rising so fast?’, ‘Can pollution effectively be controlled?’ and ‘Should governments interfere with markets?’ The macroeconomic issues covered include: ‘Why does the Government have an inflation rate target and how does it affect us?’, ‘What happens to the economy if people decide to spend more?’ and ‘How are we affected by the Chinese and Indian economies?’ There are 2 units studied in Year 12: Theme 1: Introduction to markets and market Failure Theme 2: The UK economy – performance and policies There are 2 more units studied in Year 13: Theme 3: Business behavior and the labor market Theme 4: A global perspective Careers & Further Study: Economics is a versatile subject that can help you in a number of careers. Not only could you find yourself working for big corporations, banks or the government, but your qualification in economics could also be valuable in a career like marketing, law, journalism or teaching.
An average of 5.5 in English and Math's
In Year 13, there are three exam papers: Paper 1 & 2 are a mix of multiple choice, short answer questions and data response, plus 1 essay. Paper 1 tests the understanding of Theme 1 & 3 (Microeconomics), while Paper 2 tests the understanding of Theme 2 & 4 (Macroeconomics). Paper 3 is a synoptic paper covering the whole course, containing data response questions and an essay.
