This subject has 3 areas of study: Physical chemistry: Atomic structure, Amount of substance, Bonding, Energetics, Kinetics, Chemical equilibria and Le Chatelier's principle, Oxidation, reduction and redox equations, Thermodynamics, Rate equations, Equilibrium constant Kc for homogeneous systems, Electrode potentials and electrochemical cells, Acids and bases. Inorganic chemistry: Periodicity, Group 2: the alkaline earth metals, Group 7(17): the halogens, Properties of Period 3 elements and their oxides, Transition metals, Reactions of ions in aqueous solution. Organic chemistry: Introduction to organic chemistry, Alkanes, Halogenoalkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols, Organic analysis, Optical isomerism, Aldehydes and ketones, Carboxylic acids and derivatives, Aromatic chemistry, Amines, Polymers, Amino acids, proteins and DNA, Organic synthesis, Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Chromatography. Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE passes (including both English and Mathematics) at Grade 4 or higher. Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or Grade 66 in GCSE Combined Science PLUS Grade 6 in Maths.

How you'll be assessed

There are three externally assessed (exam) papers at A-Level. Paper 1: Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Practical skills Paper 2: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Practical skills Paper 3: All specification content and Practical skills Paper 1 and Paper 2 consist of 105 marks and Paper 3 consists of 90 marks. All papers are 2 hours long. Questions range from short answer, data response and long answer questions. Paper 3 also consists of multiple choice questions. In addition there will be an assessment of practical work which will be reported separately (Practical Endorsement).
