This qualification is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information, alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily IT. Information and Communication Technology (BTEC) Level 3 Extended Certificate is the equivalent of one A Level course content. Unit 1 IT fundamentals: This is a paper based examination taken at the end of Year 12. The exam covers a wide range of general IT areas, from software uses to legal issues. Unit 2 Database Management Systems: The practical exam is taken in January of Year 12. The exam is taken over the course of a week and focuses on how to build a relational database. This is a high level IT skill which all large organisations use. Social Media for Business: This unit looks at developing a social media profile for an organisation. You will complete analytics to judge the impact of the posts shared on the profile. This is a developing area for business and many organisations will be looking for young, knowledgeable employees to lead and develop for them. Website Development: This unit looks at developing your skills and application of website design and development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Many systems managers need web-client development skills as an integral part of their overall portfolio of expertise.

The course runs over two years and consists of four units. Two examined units which are completed in Year 12. The remaining two units are coursework based and are completed in Year 13.
