Throughout this course, you will discover the importance of research and experimentation in chemistry whilst working in our well-equipped laboratories, with fully qualified chemists who have industrial experience to support their teaching. In Year 1 the focus is on the study of the foundations in chemistry, the periodic table, energy, and core organic chemistry. In Year 2, you will develop your knowledge and understanding further about physical chemistry, transition elements, organic chemistry, and analytical techniques. Throughout the course, your practical skills will be developed to enable you to achieve the practical endorsement element of the qualification and to enable you to tackle questions in the final exams which have a practical base (around 15%). There are a whole host of degrees and jobs that you could pursue with Chemistry as one of your A Level qualifications, such as medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, forensic science, applied chemistry, and chemical engineering. University Centre South Devon offers foundation degrees in Biosciences and Animal Science, which would be suitable progression routes upon the completion of your studies. What will I learn? • Atomic structure • Chemistry of reactions • Electrons, bonding, and structure • The periodic table • Basic concepts in organic chemistry
You will need to have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4(C) or above including English or equivalent. Grade 6 in Chemistry or Grade 5/6 in Combined Science.
