The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate is broadly equivalent to one A Level. The course is designed for learners who are interested in learning about the science sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in applied science. It may also offer apprenticeship or direct employment opportunities. This course serves to be taken as part of a program of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. The Qualification consists of three mandatory units: • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science I • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques • Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills Learners will also study the optional unit: • Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems
5+ Grade 4s at GCSE or equivalent. Grade 4 in English. In addition, Grade 4 or above in GCSE Science (single or combined) or Merit in Level 2 BTEC Applied Science study and Grade 4 in Mathematics is required.
Mandatory units; 1: Principles and Applications of Science I and Mandatory Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills are externally set written examinations and written task assessments. Mandatory Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques and the designated optional unit are portfolio-based assessments.
