Course summary

In the first year, psychology students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological concepts, theories, research studies, research methods and ethical issues. They will apply psychological knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts, analyse, interpret and evaluate psychological concepts, theories, research studies and research methods They will also evaluate therapies and treatments including in terms of their appropriateness and effectiveness. Knowledge and understanding of research methods, practical research skills and mathematical skills are also critical. These skills will be developed through study of the specification content and through ethical practical research activities, involving: designing research, conducting research, analysing and interpreting data. In carrying out practical research activities, students will manage associated risks and use information and communication technology (ICT). Students will study topics such as: social influence, memory, attachment, approaches to psychology and research methods. Students will learn about: how memory works, how we form attachments with our parents, why we conform and obey others and how we bring about social change, why some people develop mental illnesses, the biology behind our brain’s thoughts and feelings and the different explanations for human behaviour. In year 2, students will study specific topics such as: relationships, schizophrenia and forensic psychology.

Entry requirements

Five 9-4 grades at GCSE including a minimum of a grade 6 in English language
