Course summary

The main reason for studying Mathematics to an advanced level is that you will find it interesting and enjoyable. You will like its challenge, its clarity, and the fact that you generally know when you are right. Knowledge of Mathematics is fundamental to many areas of Higher Education and there is a national shortage of trained mathematicians. Mathematics complements studies in many areas such as Sciences, Finance, Economics and Business, Computer Studies and Engineering. Studies have shown that people with an A-Level in Mathematics also tend to earn more on average than those without. Whilst this in itself should not be the only reason to study Mathematics, the transferable skills that you develop including problem solving, team work, analytical and lateral thinking, make you a very favourable candidate for any employer or university. Mathematics is often a very useful prerequisite for so many degrees, due to the key role it plays in virtually all areas of Science, Industry and Commerce, Technology and Design. Over 70% of students who went on to do degrees in Economics and Chemistry had completed an A-Level in Maths.
