Course summary

Sociology is the study of human social life, groups, and societies. It is a dazzling and compelling enterprise having as its subject matter our own behaviour as social beings. The core of sociology is extremely wide ranging from the analysis of encounters between individuals in the street up to the investigation of global social processes. If you want to understand what makes this or any other society possible why most of us conform to rules and norms of behavior as if they were fixed, or what lies behind everyday interactions between individuals and groups, then sociology may be for you. During the course, you will study many topics as separate issues like family life, crime, and education. We try to understand how individuals behave in these areas. In addition, we try to identify the ways in which membership of certain groups, over which the individual may exercise very little control (e.g. social class, ethnicity, and gender), exerts a profound influence over his/her life. We will discover that all aspects of social life are interconnected and by studying sociology you will not have all the answers but you will be asking some very interesting questions about the society you and others live in.
