Course summary

In this course, students will learn the terms, processes, principles and theories related to the study of behaviour. It will help them to understand the complexity of human behaviour, including child development, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses. Students will also gain an understanding of the scientific nature of the subject. • Biological Approach - Is human behaviour explained through the scientific principles of Biology, including evolution, neurotransmitters and localisation of brain function. Are babies biologically programmed to make us care for them or do they become attached to adults simply because we feed them? • Cognitive approach – Human behaviour explained through the computer analogy, internal mental processes and the role of internal schemas • Psychodynamic approach – Human behaviour explained through early childhood experiences, the exploration of the unconscious mind and the tripartite personality • Behaviorist approach – Human behaviour is explained through the process of learning, conditioning and the that humans and animals learn in similar ways • Positive approach – Human behaviour is explained through the acknowledgement of free will, the authenticity of goodness and the importance of mindfulness • Research methods - How do Psychologists investigate whether their theories are true? Students learn how to design investigations, analyse data and present research findings

Entry requirements

5 GCSE’s grade 4 or above. In addition, grade 6 in English Language, Mathematics and Science.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is by three written essay based examinations.
