The Extended Diploma in Applied Science is the core qualification studied in the second year of a Level 3 Programme of Study in Applied Science. It is the perfect qualification for students who want to continue their level 3 studies in science following their study of a Foundation Diploma in Applied Science and provides learners with a range of optional pathways to prepare them for progression into University Level Education or employment. Pathway 1 - Applied Science Pathway 2 - Biomedical Science Pathway 3 - Analytical and Forensic Science While on the second year of the Extended Diploma, you will study the following units regardless of your pathway: - Principles and Applications of Science 2 - Investigative Project - Contemporary Issues in Science - Genetics and Genetic Engineering Applications of Organic Chemistry Plus the following optional units based on your chosen pathway: Applied Science - Physiology of Human Body Systems - Medical Physics Applications Biomedical Science - Physiology of Human Body Systems - Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques Analytical and Forensic Science - Practical Chemical Analysis - Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis
Successfully completing the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Applied Science with a merit grade or higher, plus meeting further entry requirements related to attendance and a mature approach to learning.
Of the 7 Units studied in the second year, 5 are achieved by completing assignments. This coursework is assessed against Pass, Merit & Distinction criteria to determine an overall grade for each unit. One unit is assessed by means of an externally set examination & a further unit is assessed via the completion of a project. These are awarded against nationally agreed criteria & moderated both internally & externally. Certain sections of the course are assessed by written examinations.
