Course summary

Chemistry is involved in every aspect of our daily lives. Chemistry explains the behaviour of all the materials around us from the strength of the bricks which enable our houses to stand up, to the fuel which keeps our houses warm and powers cars, trains, buses and aeroplanes. Chemistry keeps our bodies moving, produces drugs to make us healthy and clothes to protect us from the weather. Chemistry produces detergents to clean clothes, people, houses and many other things. Chemistry causes pollution and then helps to counteract it. Chemistry not only helps you understand the world, it also opens up a world of opportunities.

Entry requirements

Grade 7 achieved in Double Science or 7 achieved in Chemistry. Grade 6 in English and Maths.

How you'll be assessed

Students will be assessed at the end of the 2 year course over 3 exams covering content from both years (modules 1-6). Periodic Table, Elements & Physical Chemistry and Synthesis & Analytical techniques both carry 37%, and are worth 100 marks; Unified Chemistry carries 26% and is worth 70 marks. Each module has a set of complimentary Student Assessment Groups (PAGs), which are the practical assessments. These require the students to successfully complete practical activities along with a set of questions. These questions could be drawing diagrams, analysing graphs or data, or simply evaluating the experiment they have just completed. The practical assessment is separate from the examination. Upon completing the course, the students will achieve a grade along with a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ for their practical skills.
