The aim of the department is to foster an ability to learn independently as well as in groups, resulting in a genuine feeling of being a significant part of a team. You will need to be able to think fast and speak up. It is a collaborative effort and your classmates are a key resource. You will take part in discussions and debates, mock elections as well as presentations. Approximately 5 hours per week. Minimum! This should involve reading newspapers and watching and listening to the news to ensure that you are aware of the most recent political debates and developments.
- For the course students should have obtained 5 GCSE passes at grade 4 or above and would benefit from having achieved at least a grade 4 in English Literature and a Humanities subject. You do not have to have studied the subject before to take it as an A Level but you will require an interest in current affairs and politics. You will be expected to read a wide variety of texts and develop effective communication skills for essays and discussion. - Individual subject minimum GCSE requirements (these apply in addition to our Sixth Form entry criteria of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths*)
Politics is assessed through 100% examination. There are three 2-hour long A Level exam papers in the summer of Year 13. The exams assess your knowledge and understanding of political concepts and processes, application of your knowledge and understanding and your analytical and evaluation skills. Most questions expect extended explanations or balanced and fully supported essay arguments.
