Course summary

You should take this course if you have an interest in current affairs and would like to broaden your understanding of the political process. This course suits students who are interested in debate and who would like to develop their understanding of the UK’s and USA’s political system by analysing and evaluating the effectiveness of the processes in place. This course will develop an understanding of: • The democratic features of the UK • The changing nature of the UK’s constitution • The role Parliament plays in the protection of rights and liberties • The different electoral systems used throughout the UK and their democratic features • Voting behaviour and the role and impact of the media • The processes used in the USA and how they are comparable to the UK Year 1: You will study, analyse and evaluate the representative features of the UK, including the power of devolved bodies, electoral systems, political parties and voting behaviour. You will also study the institutions that exist in the UK and how they interact with one another as well as the core ideologies of Conservatism, Liberalism and Socialism. Year 2: You will study and evaluate the representative features of the USA and compare these with the UK as well as non-core ideology of feminism.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSEs graded 9-5 including English at grade 4 or above. A keen interest in politics is important as you will be required to stay versed in current affairs.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is by three written exams consisting of extended essay questions.
