BTEC applied Science is an alternative to studying Science at A Level, and develops a blend of technical and academic Science skills that will support your progression to university or employment. This BTEC Extended Diploma full-time course will enable you to develop scientific skills and understanding with units in chemistry, biology, physics and maths. There are 2 pathways which share a common first year and allow students to specialise in their second, extended diploma year. Students are able to apply for either pathway and make a choice at the end of their first year. Foundation diploma in Applied Science (Year 1) You will study a range of units, for example: • Principles and applications of science I • Practical scientific procedures and techniques • Science investigation skills • Laboratory techniques and their application • Physiology of human body systems • Genetics and genetic engineering. Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Year 2) You will study a range of units, for example: • Principles and applications of science II • Investigative project • Contemporary issues in science • Medical physics applications • Practical chemical analysis • Microbiology and microbiological techniques • Biomedical science.
• A BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science at Merit or Distinction grade • Three GCSEs at grade C or 4 including two science subjects plus English and mathematics at grade 4
Some core units are externally assessed. This can be either a written exam or a practical test. Other units are assessed via internally marked assignments, set by course tutors.
