Sociology is the study of society - how people interact in groups. A level Sociology examines social behaviour from a variety of perspectives: how it originates and then develops, and the ways people are organised into groups according to distinctions such as class, gender and race. A level Sociology also looks at the institutions and forces which shape and are shaped by groups within a society, such as the media, religion and education.
Students must have achieved a minimum of a Grade 5A GCSE in Sociology or Grade 6 GCSE in English Language for entry on to this course. Students with a Grade 5A in English can be considered at the Subject Leader’s discretion.
Paper 1— Education, Sociological Theory and Research Methods • Written exam 2 hours in total, 80 marks in total, 33.3% of total A-level. • Short answer and extended writing in each section. Paper 2— Topics in Sociology • Written exam 2 hours in total, 80 marks in total, 33.3% of total A-Level • Families & Households, Beliefs in Society • Extended writing in each section Paper 3— Crime and Deviance, Sociological Theory and Research Methods (same as bullet points for paper 1)
