Course summary

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Business provides you with the comprehensive knowledge, understanding and skills needed to enter a wide variety of careers within the business and commercial sectors as well as the opportunity to progress to higher education. Equivalent to three A Levels, the course is about the practical development of business knowledge and skills, where you will study 7 Mandatory Units and 5 Specialist Units. The 7 mandatory units in the Extended Diploma give learners an introduction to and an understanding of business and include: Exploring Business, Developing a Marketing Campaign, Personal and Business Finance, Managing an Event, Principles of Management, Business Decision Making and International Business. Specialist units cover a range of business topics such as team building, creative product promotion, pitching for a new business, recruitment and work experience. As part of your study programme you also get the opportunity to complete a maths and/or English GCSE if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Extended Certificate with overall Merit in a relevant subject plus Maths &/or English at grade 4 or above.

How you'll be assessed

You are continuously assessed throughout the course. 42% external assessment (where one unit is assessed by a written exam and three units assessed by a task set by the awarding body and completed under supervised conditions). 58% internally assessed coursework. 13 units in total. You are continuously assessed throughout the course. For each unit national standards are laid down, which you have to meet. Your tutors ensure that you are given opportunities to do this through projects, running events, assignments, case studies and problem-solving situations. You are required to sit one external exam and complete three supervised assignments that are externally assessed by the exam board. As such it is vital that no holidays are taken throughout term time in May/June. You will attend college full-time for two years. Learning is through many different methods, including discussion, research and presentation, together with practical skill development where possible. You learn, and are assessed through many different methods. Your timetable will include independent study time to enable you to consolidate the work carried out in lectures.
