Course summary

The purpose of historical inquiry is not simply to present facts but to search for an interpretation of the past. It is commonly acknowledged that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present. History is essential to the traditional objectives of the liberal arts: the quest for wisdom and virtue. Most importantly, history History combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward born of successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems. You will explore four different components; a British period study on the Late Tudors, a thematic study on Civil Rights in the USA 1865-1992, and Russia 1894-1941 for a non-British period study as well as a 3,000-4,000 word coursework unit.
