The vocational course is available to any student, whether or not you have studied BTEC Applied Science previously. BTECs are qualifications that are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding, and skills that they need to prepare them for employment. The aims of the course are for students to develop experimental, analytical, and evaluative skills through practical work. Learners will complete several assignments in which their analytical and evaluation skills will be assessed. Learners will develop personal skills in the areas of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. They will also develop skills in: • Planning, organizing, and initiative skills. • Independent, teamwork, and communicative skills. • Decision-making and problem-solving. • Analytical, evaluative, and critical thinking skills. • Time management and practical skills A qualification in Applied Science provides students with a wide range of transferable skills, which are important in many career fields. This qualification is ideal for learners who want to progress to university or into employment. Employment opportunities include a wide range of science-based jobs and also those within the legal, civil, and police services. A BTEC in Applied Science can lead to a career in: • Health Care Assistant • Research Scientist • Forensic scientist • Nurse • Health care administrator • Teacher
4 GCSEs 9-4 (or equivalent), including minimum grade 5 in English & Maths and minimum grade 5 in Combined Science GCSE.
There are exams now in place on this course as well as controlled tasks that are assessed externally. Assessment is also made up of coursework. You will produce a portfolio of evidence showing that you have met the assessment objectives. This will be evidenced through practical assignments, oral presentations/ practical demonstrations, written reports, and project work. Submission deadlines are set throughout the year and must be adhered to. You will need to ensure that you are organized and enjoy spending time working through a range of individual tasks. • The BTEC Diploma in Applied Science will lead to the equivalent of two A Levels and requires 8 units to be studied over 2 years. o Pass is equivalent to an E at A Level o Merit is equivalent to a C at A Level o Distinction is equivalent to an A at A Level o Distinction* is equivalent to an A* at A Level Unit 1 - Principles and Applications of Science 1 External exam Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques Internal Assignment Unit 3 – Science Investigation Skills Externally assessed Unit 4 – Laboratory Techniques and their Application Internal Assignment Unit 5 - Principles and Applications of Science 2 External exam Unit 6 – Investigative Project Internal Assignment Unit 8 - Physiology of Human Body Systems Internal Assignment Unit 9 – Human Regulation and Reproduction Internal Assignment
