Film Studies is a strongly academic discipline that delves into the form, content, historical context, cultural impact, and economic aspects of cinema. Our A Level course is designed to engage your passion for film and broaden your cultural and historical perspectives on the world through the lens of cinema. The skills you develop in Film Studies will serve you well in higher education and the workplace, fostering creativity, problem-solving abilities, effective communication, critical thinking and self-management. Beyond the classroom, our students have the opportunity to enrich their learning through exciting trips and experiences. Immerse yourself in the world of cinema with visits to renowned institutions such as the British Film Institute in London and the iconic Harry Potter Studio Tour. For an inspirational look at what the industry has to offer, join us on our residential trip to Los Angeles, where you can explore the heart of the film industry and gain valuable insights into its inner workings. We also offer enrichments within the department, such as Short Film Making, to help develop your understanding of how films are made and give you a broader experience which will benefit your future ambitions. Film Studies complements the study of various other subjects, including Art & Design, Business Studies, English Literature, Media Studies, and Sociology to name a few. The knowledge and skills you acquire in this course open doors to diverse career paths related to the film industry, such as film production, film journalism, marketing, and distribution.
To study this course, 5 or more GCSEs graded 4/5 or above including English Language, and ideally, Maths is required. You do not need to have studied Film Studies at GCSE level to enrol in this course; all you need is a curious mind and a drive to delve deeper into the world of cinema.
Students’ final grades will be determined via their performance across the following two written exams that are two hours in length (worth 70% of the overall grade) and a coursework portfolio [NEA] (worth 30%).
