Course summary

Sociology is the study of Society, the ‘social world’. Sociology looks beyond the day-today and asks what is the real nature of Society, why does it function like it does and for whose benefit? Sociology asks you to consider how key concepts such as power, gender, ethnicity and culture affect society and what shapes the world we live in.

Entry requirements

- Students are required to have obtained 5 good GCSE passes at grade 4 or above including grade 4 in GCSE Sociology or another Humanities subject and English Literature. There is no requirement to have studied Sociology at GCSE - Individual subject minimum GCSE requirements (these apply in addition to our Sixth Form entry criteria of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths*)

How you'll be assessed

Sociology is assessed through 100% examination. There are three 2-hour A-Level exams in the summer of Year 13. The exams assess knowledge and understanding of key concepts and methods and students’ ability to explain and evaluate different sociological perspectives. Questions range from short knowledge answers for 4 or 6 marks to longer explanations for 10 or 20 marks and an extended argument worth 30 marks.
